Arts The Bachelor of Arts (BA) is one of the best known university degrees. It brings together subjects from the humanities and social sciences to create graduates who have a broad knowledge of society and culture and key skills in communication, research and critical analysis. At JCU the BA includes 20 different majors or specialisations. It offers great flexibility in terms of study options, with increasing subjects and majors available online. Arts graduates are recognised for their excellent communication skills, ability to critically analyse information, creative problem solving and research abilities. They find careers in the private and public sector in many interesting roles. Social Work Social Workers help people thrive in their environment, promote positive relationships and work towards creating a just and equitable society. Whether working with individuals, groups or communities, Social Workers are advocates for positive change. They provide counselling and support to people in need, to help them attain their full potential. They also work in the development of social policy for governments and agencies. This is a professionally accredited course, and includes supervised field placements from second year.

Career outcomes

Career prospects for social workers are strong. They can pursue careers in either human services or social policy research and development. They work for government and non-government agencies and communities, or work in private practice, providing counseling and support services. Graduates may specialise in particular service areas including: the elderly, public housing, drug addiction, child abuse, domestic violence, youth, and mental illness.
