Course Description

In the Bachelor of Music (Music Theatre) degree, students develop the ear of a musician, the body awareness of a dancer, the imagination of an actor, the vision of a director and the fortitude of a producer. Practical Skill Development & Performance All units of study are practical in terms of value adding to the performance experience. The underlying approach is that creating numerous performance opportunities will build the confidence and skill level required of students wishing to make a career in music theatre both real and rewarding. Skill development is tested when the student is required to show what they have learned in the performance arena. Major Studies Individual Voice Lessons Voice class plus coaching with an accompanist, development of a flexible vocal technique in the stylistically versatile music theatre genre, development of an extensive repertoire for audition and performance purposes, plus development of ‘one on one’ individual singing. Masterclass Development of the singer as musician and storyteller, interactive group work and refining of vocal performance. Performance Studies Researching, rehearsing and performing works from the 1920’s to the present day including Australian Music Theatre works. Creating, producing and performing original works, work shopping new works for Industry composers/writers, plus developing production skills and performances on and off the AIM campus. Dance & Acting Dance and Acting classes are an integral part of the development of the Music Theatre performer. Dance classes develop technical skill and choreography. Acting, as an essential component in story telling via song and as a craft unto itself, is an integral part of the Music Theatre course. Students attend technical class and text based studies.
