Master of Fine Arts – Printmaking

Course Description

Printmaking is an exciting program with four highly accomplished full-time faculty who are respected in their field and whose research is shown internationally with significant acclaim. Faculty teach in seven well-equipped and properly ventilated studio spaces including intaglio, lithography, relief, letterpress, screen-printing, digital and paper-making. Other graphic applications such as photogravure, monotype, book arts and experimental print processes are offered regularly. The printmaking program is resource rich in history, knowledge and facilities; few other programs in the country have the same capacity of resources as the printmaking program at ASU. The print area has a dream lithography studio, with a large quantity of lime stones, some as large as 24" x 36", a very large collection of lead type in a dedicated letterpress studio, a screen-printing studio fully equipped with an exposure unit capable of handling a 48" x 60" screen frame, a one arm press for screens as 36" x 48" and a large a backlit washout booth. The intaglio studio is a 1260 square foot with a dedicated acid room, three sinks, and four etching presses including a two Takach presses, 40" x 72" and 18" x 36", one Charles Brand 26" x 48" press, and one Griffin 33" x 60" electric press. The new digital lab houses a 42" vinyl cutter, Epson inkjet printers for medium and large formats on paper, fabric, or film and boasts a 24" x 36" Universal Laser System to engrave and cut a variety of materials and substrates. Students get hands on learning with expensive pieces of professional grade equipment. The faculty encourages experimentation with an interdisciplinary approach to building a studio practice. Students pursue a personal direction with independence and individuality but are encouraged to become well-rounded printmakers experiencing and understanding many media and processes.
